LSD? But, what about Marijuana?

We've talked quite a bit about how the CIA was involved with LSD: MK-Ultra studies of its effects; its promotion by Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, and the Grateful Dead; and so forth.

But, do we know of any evidence that Marijuana was promoted by the government at any point? Do we believe its effects are as culturally destructive as LSD? Does anybody have thoughts about this?

Hello Mad1,

Welcome to the Forum, and thanks for reading and commenting.

I was actually hoping the discussion might move in this direction. The government has been pushing LSD (without much long-term success), cocaine and other hard drugs, and of course alcohol use is legal, culturally encouraged, and very modestly taxed; compared to all those drugs, marijuana is pretty harmless if not downright mind-expanding, and its use has been entirely driven by the "grass roots" activists, in spite of being fought tooth and nail by the Feds.

The article you linked, mentions that marijuana use is now legal in four states (including here in Oregon) -- but it's still illegal according to the federal government. Although the Obama administration is respecting the states, it's not obvious to me what future administrations might do.

We have a historical model on how things may play out, Daniel Okrent's Last Call:The Rise and Fall of Prohibition connects a lot of dots.
Myself I believe as the tax collection numbers come in from Washington and Colorado it will become irresistible to the rest of the States.

I meant to also include what might be called "pot tourism" which has already begun, how long before every potential destination needs pot to compete?

Wyatt {Peter Fonda} and Billy {Dennis Hopper} introduce George *{Jack Nicholson} to marijuana.

*Although Jack Nicholson appears briefly in this film, it helped to catapult his career to "Movie Star" status.
Nicholson was also nominated for an Academy Award as "Best Supporting Actor" for his plausible and enduring performance as George Hanson.

Easy Rider
is a 1969 American road movie written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern, produced by Fonda and directed by Hopper. It tells the story of ...The protagonists are two freewheeling hippies: Wyatt (Fonda), nicknamed "Captain America", and Billy (Hopper). Fonda and Hopper said that these characters' names refer to Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid.[4] Wyatt dresses in American flag-adorned leather (with an Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge affixed to it), while Billy dresses in Native American-style buckskin pants and shirts and a bushman hat. The former is appreciative of help and of others, while the latter is often hostile and leery of outsiders. Antonio Mendoza –plays Jesus;

Lexicographer Jesse Sheidlower, the principal American editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, argues that the terms hipster and hippie derive from the word hip, whose origins are unknown.[7] The word hip in the sense of "aware, in the know" is first attested in a 1902 cartoon by Tad Dorgan,[8] and first appeared in print in a 1904 novel by George Vere Hobart, Jim Hickey, A Story of the One-Night Stands, where a black American character uses the slang phrase "Are you hip?"

Life in the commune appears to be hard, with young hippies from the city struggling to grow their own crops in a dry climate with poor soil and little rainfall. (One of the children seen in the commune is played by Fonda's four-year-old daughter Bridget). At one point, the bikers witness a prayer for blessing of the new crop, as put by a communard: A chance "to make a stand", and to plant "simple food, for our simple taste". The commune is also host to a traveling theater group that "sings for its supper" (performs for food). The notion of "free love" appears to be practiced, with two women seemingly sharing the affections of the hitch-hiking communard and then turning their attention to Wyatt and Billy. The hitch-hiker wants the two bikers to stay at the commune, saying, "the time is now", to which Wyatt replies "I'm hip about time...but I just gotta go." As the bikers leave, the hitch-hiker (known only as "Stranger on highway" in the credits) gives Wyatt some LSD for him to share with "the right people;

As they camp that night, Wyatt and Billy introduce George to marijuana. As an alcoholic and a "square", George is reluctant to try the marijuana ("It leads to harder stuff", and "I don't want to get hooked"), but he quickly relents.

Pharmaceutical companies may seize control of Canada's medical marijuana supply.
By Reverend Damuzi - Tuesday, February 29 2000
A source within the Ministry of Health, who wishes to remain anonymous, has provided documents and information to Cannabis Culture, describing how Canadian pot is to be grown for upcoming medical trials. The documents call for 185 kg (408 pounds) of pot to be grown in the first year, and double that amount for the second through fifth years.

By the end of 1967, many of the hippies and musicians who initiated the Summer of Love had moved on. Beatle George Harrison had once visited Haight-Ashbury and found it to be just a haven for dropouts, inspiring him to give up LSD.[citation needed] Misgivings about the hippie culture, particularly with regard to drug abuse and lenient morality, fueled the moral panics of the late 1960s.[65]

I tried pot only a few times and I developed a panic disorder that took eight years to finally erode to the point I could say I was more or less cured- I'm still claustrophobic enough to stay out of automobiles if I can help it- Will power and behavior modification were the answers, along with a couple of beers if I had to travel any great distance by rail- The actor Steve Martin relates a similar reaction to pot in his memoir Born Standing Up- Pot isn't for everyone, as neither are other stimulants from case to case- I've lived most of my life in San Francisco where pot laws have not been enforced, at least in the affluent/business parts of town, in decades- My impression is that pot forgives a lot of mediocrity in people who regularly imbibe and in that sense the powers that shouldn't be may see an advantage in promoting the personal use angle while the federal government keeps a lid (pun) on the industrial hemp side of the question- Promotion of stoner culture (4/20 is in effect an official holiday in this town) will probably increase while the industrial use will be suppressed-
